Google Algorithm Explained
If you are a new Internet marketer or online business owner, chances are high that you have heard the term “Google Algorithm” at least a couple of times. What exactly is this thing? Google Algorithm is a group of algorithms designed by the Google search company to give search results that are most relevant to the queries users have performed. In computer science and mathematics, an algorithm is typically a finite collection of computer-implemented instructions, usually to solve a finite problem, to achieve a certain objective or to find a solution to a given equation. These algorithms are used to give rise to new search methods which are better in quality.
An example of a Google Algorithm is the way they rank website videos. We all know that video websites such as YouTube are rated by how many “visits”, or people that viewed the video, within a specific time frame. In order for YouTube to rank high for this category, it needs to have lots of views in order to be considered relevant for that keyword phrase. So, how does Google arrive at their rankings then? Google uses a number of algorithms and mathematical calculations in order to determine the relevance of a website to a given search.
In order to further explain the Google Algorithm, we can use a simple example. Let’s say that there are two websites, “A” and “B”, which are listed on the same search engine. They both have the same number of visitors, A, but A has more hits while B has fewer. The Google website ranking signal assigns A the highest ranking, while B is ranked lower because it has less hits. Now, if we look at the website ranking signals again, we will see that the website ranking signal has now determined that A has more visitors than B, so A will be placed at the top of the first page of the Google search engine’s SERP.
